I have the honour to call Your Lordship's
attention to the fact that the period for which Mr.William
Hunter, M.B., C.M. was appointed Bacteriologist in Hongkong,
on the conditions embodied in the correspondence covered by
Mr. Chamberlain's despatch No.410 of the 6th. December,
425 1901, will expire on the 27th. February next and to enclose

a minute by Dr. F. Clark, Acting Principal Civil Medical
Officer on the subject of the appointment being made per-
manent.

The 4th. paragraph of the letter from the
30 Colonial Office to Dr. Hunter, dated the 11th. November,
1901, which formed an enclosure to Mr. Chamberlain's des-
patch above referred to stated that it was possible that
an offer to make the appointment permanent might be made to
Dr. Hunter in the event of his services proving as useful
to
